I am amazed when I think of how far we’ve come in the past five years.
Back in 2019, Cute Little Fuckers grew out of a Kickstarter campaign.
In fact, we were the first adult toy company to be allowed on Kickstarter in over a decade.
And we very nearly didn’t make it there.
Queer erasure and censorship have a deep history in our culture, from attempted bans on printed materials to the suppression of queer artwork to the sanitization of our history lessons to the dogged reinforcement of heteronormativity.
Because of this, it may come as no surprise to learn that in order to launch our campaign, it took seven months of negotiation with the folks at Kickstarter, who were hesitant to platform a queer sex toy company.
And after all of that, it looked like I might have to give up.
Instead, I wrote them one final letter, telling them that censoring us was equivalent to censoring sexuality and queerness. I insisted they show up for marginalized communities, even when it wasn’t easy.
Amazingly, the letter did the trick. Our campaign suddenly went live, and it was absolute magic.
But that’s a story for another day…
What this particular win represented was a win against queer censorship, which continues to run rampant across our culture, impacting small businesses everywhere.
My cute little monsters have gone on to change the landscape of queerness and sexuality in a number of different ways. The stories you’ve shared have made that clear and, every time I hear from you, I feel like my heart might explode.
But this… this was the first big win, and knowing we were able to accomplish something so extraordinary in the face of something so deeply entrenched makes me so proud.
