No Products in the Cart
While promoting the Kickstarter for my TTRPG this month, I’ve been reminded all over again of how critical representation is, and how critical this work is.
It happened when some people saw my ads for Midnight Press and felt called to make the most ridiculous comments. (“Film noir? More like lesbian noir.”) 🙄
It seems that some people still think that if you want something to be for everyone, you should only show who they consider to be "normal" people. (See: cis, straight, able-bodied, and often white people.)
Have you ever heard something so silly? 🤪
Of course, we still occasionally get similarly ridiculous comments here at CLF, from folks who wonder why we’ve given our toys pronouns and personalities and fun back stories. 🤷
Which only reminds us how important this work is.
CLF (and Midnight Press) is intentional about modeling a full spectrum of identities in its toys and imagery. Because if you want to be inclusive of everyone—or of as many people as possible—you must depict everyone.
It’s wild how radical that is.
Still, I remember a time when comments like the ones above were considered the norm.
But haven’t you noticed the shift? The way people roll their eyes or push back now when they see those ridiculous comments?
When progress is gradual, we sometimes don’t see it. But things are changing, and they continue to change. That’s because of us. All of us.
CLF has been making some really radical changes in the adult toy space–changes we’ve seen ripple into other spaces–and we continue to fight that fight.
And you’ve been doing that, too. Every time you support businesses that depict all sorts of people, and that are actually owned and run by all sorts of people, you’re doing real, critical, and radical work.
Together, we’re creating gradual–but truly tangible–change in the world. Keep on fighting that fight, and we promise to do the same.
I hope you continue to uplift radical people doing radical projects.
I hope you continue to be radical.
